Nailing the first interview when you are applying for a job is the first step to ensuring that you make a good impression. It does not matter how professional your CV is or how impressive you look, if you are going to go into an interview unprepared, you may as well stay at home.

Employers want to see that their potential employees are confident and keen to work hard in order to contribute to the company. Here are 7 simple interview tips that will ensure that you make a good first impression.

Do Research

The first step is to prepare. It is vital that you do research regarding the company before you speak to a potential employer. Do as much reading about the company as possible and see whether they have made any headlines in the newspapers.

Are their employees satisfied?

Do they have a good turnover at the end of the month?

You can also research the average salary of the position you are applying for so that you can perhaps negotiate when the topic arises.

Doing research enables you to find out more about the company so that you can make an informed choice about working there and it will allow you to be more confident when speaking to the interview committee.

Dress Well, but Be Comfortable

Unfortunately, we do live in a society where visual appeal makes the first impression. If you are not going to make some effort with your appearance, then you are probably starting the interview on a bad foot. It would be wise to plan your outfit beforehand.

Remember, you have to dress for the job you want. A new pair of pants or a fancy pair of earrings might just complement the look. It needs to be said, however, that you need to feel comfortable as well.

It would not be advisable to buy a pair of pants two sizes too tight and shifting around in your seat as you answer questions. If you know they are going to take you on a tour of the company building, maybe leave your heels at home.

Prepare Questions

It is obvious that during an interview the employer will be asking the potential employee a set of questions. This is the best way to get information out of a person. But what is even more striking is if the potential employee asks the employer a set of questions as well. Not only will it show that you are eager to learn more about the company, but it will also give you a sense of direction as to what the company has to offer you.

When you prepare your questions, choose only the most strategic ones. If you forget the questions that you have prepared you can always fall back on other pressing questions like why the previous person left the position or asking about some of the biggest challenges the company is facing at the moment.

Ask Questions

This is definitely not the same as preparing questions. You are encouraged to ask questions about things that you do not understand. It is important that you know all there is to know about a company before you jump in and start working for them. If something is unclear, ask immediately. Do not let the interview simply happen to you. Take part in the process and see if you can learn something from it. Studies have also shown that people are more likely to like you if you show interest in what is important to them.

If You Do Not Know, Say SO

No one expects you to know everything. There might be some questions where you do not have an answer on hand.

What do you do then?

Simply state that you do not know. Follow this statement up by saying that you can find out or that you can have an answer when you go back for your second interview.

This shows that you are confident enough in yourself and you know that you will be called back and it also shows that you are willing to go the extra mile to find an answer to something that you do not know.

This is something that an employer values in their employees and it will definitely increase your chances of succeeding in the interview.

Be On-Time

This cannot be stressed enough. If you have set a time for your interview, you must make sure that you are on time. In fact, it would not hurt to arrive a few minutes early. Being on time shows that you take yourself seriously and you respect the person who set up the interview. The interviewer might be late to the interview, but you will not be.

Arriving early gives you time to settle into your surroundings, having a look around, using the restroom, and calming your nerves before you enter the interview room.

Tardiness has never been a quality that people respect, so ensure that you adhere to the time that has been set aside for you.


Take Notes

When you are being interviewed, you want to look as serious and professional as possible. What’s the best way to achieve that? By taking notes. Writing down information is the best way to remember it and you can go through it at home in your own time.

This way you can make an even better decision after the interview is complete. You can write down issues that were mentioned and raise them at a point in time where there is a gap in the conversation. This way you will not forget what was said.

Taking notes also covers you as the interviewee when you are called for a second interview. If, for example, the employers deny having said something, you can simply take out your notes and show them.

The first interview is always a nerve-wracking experience but if you prepare and ensure that you do your research, you will be able to succeed in your interview.
