Multinational mining company Anglo American plc is the largest producer of platinum in world, with 40% of the world’s platinum coming from them. The mining company is also a major producer of diamonds, nickel, iron ore, copper, as well as thermal and metallurgical coal. Anglo American plc operates a wide network of mining operations spanning North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australasia. In an effort to ensure a steady stream of talent, it launched the Anglo American Bursary Programme for deserving students pursuing degrees related to Mining.
The company started out in 1917 as Anglo American Corporation in Johannesburg with a £1 million backing from J.P. Morgan Chase. In 1945, the AAC ventured into the coal mining industry with its acquisition of Coal Estates. It then shifted its focus on developing the Vaal reef mines and the Free State goldfields. The move was a success and made AAC the largest gold-mining company in the world.
Anglo American Bursary Programme
The Anglo American Bursary Programme provides comprehensive coverage of all school-incurred expenses which includes tuition, boarding, food and book expenses, among others. It is awarded to students who are pursuing or intending to pursue a degree in several Mining-related disciplines. These include:
- Mining Engineering
- Mine Survey
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
Selected bursars who are given full coverage are required to provide vacation work for 6 months each year. In addition, aspiring applicants who are residing in neighboring areas around a mining area are given special priority. Although a consideration, financial incapacity is not a major factor in the bursar selection process for this specific programme.
While bursars who successfully complete their course of study are guaranteed permanent employment in Anglo American, receiving an employment offer will still depend on staffing requirements at the time.
