The Air Traffic and Navigation Services is announcing vacancies for its upcoming bursary programmes for 2019. The company provides navigation, air traffic training and other relevant services all over South Africa. ATNS is accountable for all air traffic control in the country, a large portion of Southern India and the Atlantic Ocean. This means ATNS operates in an area that is about 10% of the world’s airspace.
ATNS Bursary Programme – July 2019 Programme
The ATNS Bursary Programmes runs for a duration of 12 months and is offered in three separate courses:
Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO) Bursary Programme
The Aeronautical Information Management course is the backbone and a critical component of the Air Traffic Management Office. The training programme provides opportunities to acquire and develop professional expertise in the following areas:
- NOTAM
- ATS Flight planning
- Communications
- Publishing Aeronautical Information packets
- Developing flight charting and procedural design
Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) Bursary Programme
The Air Traffic Control Officer plays a critical role as part of the navigation team. The primary task is to make sure air travel for airline passengers is conducted in the most orderly, safe and timely manner possible. In addition, ATC personnel see to it that air traffic is highly organized and that each aircraft is within safe distance from one another.
Both bursary programme will provide coverage for the following school-related expenses:
- Tuition fee coverage for the ATS Core Content Training course
- Free guest lodge accommodations as arranged by ATNS
- Transportation fees incurred related to the pursuit of the course
- Daily breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Monthly allowance
Completion of the first phase of the ATCO training programme earns an ATSO rating qualification for bursars.
The Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) is not available at the moment.
Career Options
Successful completion of the bursary/training programme will allow participants to receive a permanent employment offer within ATNS.
Requirements or Eligibility
To qualify for any of the bursary programmes being offered by ATNS, applicants must have the following minimum qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age and above
- Completed Grade 12 with English and Mathematics (SG C or HG D or at least Level 4)
- A South African citizen
- Medically fit

Opening and Closing Date
For the July programme, applications open on 01 March 2019 and closes on 30 April 2019.
Applicants who do not receive a reply back within 60 days of the closing date may consider their application as unsuccessful.
