What is the selection process?

The SARSP offers two award categories; one is the default grant, and the other is the Fulbright-Emory Distinguished Chair Scholar award. Applicants are to indicate their preferred award before submitting an application.

  • The Fulbright Selection Committee will review all applications and shortlist applicants to undergo a selection process
  • The selected candidate will be endorsed by the Committee to the Fulbright Foreign Services Board based in Washington, DC. Note that the nomination is not a guarantee for placement at a university in the US
  • The final placement decision rests on the Institute of International Education
  • Nominees who have been awarded their placement  are scheduled  to leave for the US as early as August 2023 but not later than March 2024

In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, a diverse and multi-discipline committee from the Halle Institute for Global Research will be evaluating applications based on these other equally important factors:

  • A strong application free from jargon and clearly indicates how a brief semester at Emory University will support disciplinary research and teaching with students and teachers in Emory University and South African institutions
  • How the research plan demonstrates the manner in which the applicant will utilize and maximize the grant

  • Have your referees’ name, title, and email address ready and register all three of them on the website so they can receive an invitation link to use for reference.
  • Pick your referees even before you start with the application process. This gives them enough leeway to accomplish their reference

Dependents

As mentioned earlier, a scholarship grantee is eligible to take the legal spouse and unmarried children under 21 along to the U.S.  A monthly allowance will be available to cover the health insurance of the dependents and will be part of the monthly stipend. Airfare for only one dependent will be shouldered by Fulbright as well.

Note: This is allowance is applicable only if the dependents will accompany the grantee for at least 80% of the scholarship period. If the 80% rule is not met, the grantee will shoulder any other costs of his/her dependents such as airfare, living expenses, health insurance, and any uncovered medical bills. The allowance for the dependent is insufficient to support a family, so be sure to allot funds in this regard.
