About IBM

IBM Africa Research Internship 2022
The IBM Africa Research Internship initiative offers young and bright postgraduate students the opportunity to work on ground-breaking projects at one of the world’s largest and highly-advanced research labs. You will have a chance at gaining knowledge about real-world industry challenges as well as hands-on experience that would prove priceless to your university and faculty.
As an IBM Africa Research Intern, you’ll be involved in projects centered on data-driven innovation as well as machine learning. The majority of this research is aimed towards effecting transformational impact on South Africa and the rest of the African continent. These projects cover traffic optimization, pulsar detection, TB contact tracing, natural language processing in the medical field, air quality management, and genomics just to mention a few.
Duties and responsibilities
- Develop and execute algorithms and proof of concept technologies of assigned projects
- Demonstrate expertise in defining research questions, formulating hypothesis, and developing innovative solutions aided by cutting-edge tech
- Collaborate extensively with both external and internal teams
Who should apply?

- Currently pursuing a recognized MEng, MSc, or PhD degree in the following areas:
- Computational Biology
- Data Science

- Industrial, Computer, Electronic, or Electrical Engineering

- Physics
- Must possess applied knowledge in the following fields
- Cloud computing
- Data science
- Artificial intelligence
- Computer vision
- IoT
- Applied physics
- Statistics
- Software engineering
- A South African citizen belonging to a designated group as per the Employment Equity Act
- Currently enrolled at a recognized tertiary institution pursuing any of the recognized qualification
- Solid programming experience using Python, C++, Javascript, Java, Matlab
- Demonstrated proficiency in academic research grounded on the scientific method
- Operational knowledge of current and popular machine learning methods
- Background in application programming particularly for web and mobile applications, web API development, and user experience design for different platforms
- Must be comfortable using their expertise in various domains and working with domain experts
- Preferably with operational experience with deep learning, computational mathematics, and signal and image processing
