SAAB or The South African Association of Botanists was established to promote and maintain the status of Botany across all sectors. As well as to perform functions that will further the goals of the profession.

It is comprised of members from research institutions, universities, and academic institutions from around the country, representing various academic botanical disciplines.

South African Association of Botanists Scholarship

Application are invited for the SAAB Scholarship programme for the academic year 2022, from the South African Association of Botanists.

Students with botanically-related studies at the postgraduate level (4th year/Honours/MSc) will be eligible for the bursaries.

The following values will receive bursaries:

  • For students studying at honours or fourth-year level, 3 bursaries, each valued at R12 000, will be awarded for one year. The candidates will also receive a complimentary SAAB membership for one year.
  • A bursary of R40 000 will be offered for MSc studies. The first year’s recipients will receive R20 000 and the following year’s recipients will receive R20 000 if the results of the first year are satisfactory. Additionally, candidates will receive a 2 year free membership to SAAB.

Candidates who are selected for the program will be notified by the middle of March 2022. If you do not hear back, please consider your application unsuccessful.

Who should apply?

Before applying, applicants must meet the following entry requirements (failure to do so may lead to your application being rejected):

  • The applicant must be a residential of one of the following SADC countries: Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Angola, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros, Madagascar, Mozambique,)
  • It is essential that you are studying a botanical science related qualification
  • Graduating with a minimum average of 70% is required
  • Applicants must be pursuing a study at an accredited South African tertiary institution.
  • SAAB members are required to be current members or to apply to become members
  • An SAAB-paid-up member supervisor is required
  • Students in the first year of the MSc program must have completed their BSc honours degree with an overall average of 70%.

How do I apply?

The following documents must be submitted by all applicants (failure to submit one or more items may lead to your application being disqualified):

  • The SAAB Scholarship Cover Form (.docx) must be completed
  • Document of identification (certified copy)
  • Certified copies of all your academic transcripts, if they are available
  • Your Curriculum Vitae (CV) containing the names of at least 2 references with their contact information.
  • Describe your proposed research interest by writing a motivational letter
  • A Motivational letter (from supervisor)
  • List the names and values of all the other bursaries and scholarships you have been awarded

Note: In the absence of academic transcripts, please submit a letter from your college or university’s course coordinator (in the institution letterhead) confirming your marks. Bursary payments will be made only after the successful candidates submit transcripts of their final academic results.

Application Deadline?

The last date of application for the South African Association of Botanists Scholarship 2022 is 28 February 2022.

Any applications submitted after the closing date will not be considered for the scholarship.
