About South African National Zakah Fund 

The South African National Zakáh Fund (SANZAF) collect and distribute Zakáh and Sadaqat to help the Muslim community. Their goals are to benefit the Muslim community through religious, educational, and welfare basis. For more than 43 years, SANZAF has assisted in empowering and uplifting the poor and needy in the community.

In accordance with the Shariah, Zakah recipients fall into eight categories, including the needy, the poor, the indebted, reverts, wayfarers, slaves, and those on the path of Allah.

South African National Zakah Fund Bursary

Students are invited to apply for funding for the SANZAF Zakah Bursary for the academic year 2022 by the South African National Zakáh Fund (SANZAF). Funding is provided every year to students in need who are incapable of paying for tertiary education in South Africa. Bursaries will be awarded across all study areas.

The Sanzaf Zakah Bursary selection process is as follows:

  • Potential candidates will be shortlisted by the Bursary Committee after each application is assessed.
  • Candidates shortlisted for interview will be contacted and invited via email to attend – time, date, and location of interview.
  • Insufficient documentation or failure to appear at the interview will disqualify the candidate.
  • Their regional office will provide feedback on their application.
  • The Confirmation of the Pledge letter will be sent to selected candidates.
  • The institution will receive payment of the bursary.
  • Candidate registration fees must be paid by the candidates themselves.

Who should apply?

The following criteria must be satisfied by applicants before they can apply. Your application will not be considered if you do not meet all the requirements:

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa or have a valid study permit if you are from abroad
  • The province you are applying for must be your home province
  • Proving your need for financial assistance is required
  • Applicants must be from an underprivileged background
  • This bursary can only be applied for after you have applied for NSFAS funding (apply here).
  • Applicants must be either studying or intend to study at an accredited South African University, University of Technology, or Technikon
  • Your application must meet the SANZAF’s requirements
  • To be eligible, you must fall into one of three categories:
    • Currently enrolled in Matriculation, or
    • The applicant must be in tertiary education currently or have been sponsored by a family member or themselves last year, or
    • SANZAF sponsors students who have completed a tertiary education at a tertiary institution last year

How should I apply?

Along with your online application, you must upload clear copies of the following documents (if any of these documents are missing, your application may be disqualified):

The following documents must be submitted by matriculating students:

  • If you are a foreign national, your ID or study permit (certified copy)
  • Certified copy of latest matric results
  • Describe why you are deserving of the bursary in a motivational letter
  • Your school’s testimonial
  • The latest payslips of parents/guardians/spouses if they are employed. The death certificate of a deceased parent or spouse if they are unemployed

The following documents are required for tertiary students not previously sponsored by SANZAF:

  • If you are a foreign national, your ID or study permit (certified copy)
  • Certified copy of matric final results
  • Academic transcripts from all tertiary institutions (on institution letterheads)
  • Describe why you are deserving of the bursary in a motivational letter
  • The testimony of a faculty member, imam, or religious leader
  • The latest payslips of parents/guardians/spouses if they are employed. The death certificate of a deceased parent or spouse if they are unemployed

SANZAF-sponsored tertiary students must submit the following documents:

  • Final results/certificates for Matric
  • Tertiary mid-year results (on institution letterhead) for 2021
  • The latest payslips of parents/guardians/spouses if they are employed. The death certificate of a deceased parent or spouse if they are unemployed

Application Deadline?

The application deadline is 28 February 2022. Please apply by the closing date if you wish to be considered – any applications received after these dates will not be accepted.
