The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Pretoria, South Africa is inviting suitable candidates who would be interested in filling its Human Rights Internship Programme for 2020.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, or OHCHR, is the Secretariat department that works to:

Strengthen international human rights mechanisms
Promote equality and fight discrimination
End impunity and strengthen accountability
Intensify the rule of law

The office was founded in 1998 and has since been helping countries, UN agencies, civil society groups and national human rights organizations with the objective of reaching the full realization of human rights.

UN-OHCHR Human Rights Internship Programme

The internship will be based in the OHCR’s South Africa Regional Office in Pretoria with the successful intern reporting to the Human Rights Officer of the designated work unit. The main responsibility of the incumbent is to provide support to the OHCR as it strives to fulfill its mission to protect all human rights of the people. It is also the OHCR’s mandate to educate the people about their rights and provide assistance to those who preserve such rights.

Although the daily duties of the successful candidate is based on the individual’s background and skills, there are specific functions to perform such as:

Prepare and organize activities related to country and thematic aspects of human rights scenarios in the sub-region
Conduct research and analysis
Compile and analyze data and indicators on human rights
Provide support with activities promoting human rights
Support activities with UN country teams
Assist with promoting human rights issues
Support development and execution of human rights training programmes
Take minutes during meetings, briefing, statements and communications

Who should apply?

Must be currently pursuing a graduate programme or
Currently on last year of Bachelor’s degree qualification, preferably in field of law, international relations, political science or social science, or
A recent Bachelor’s degree graduate (no more the a year) of any of the aforementioned fields of study
Able to start within a year after graduation date
Exhibits professional competence and skill of subject matter
Able to meet commitments and deadlines
Demonstrates persistence in solving problems
Effective written and oral communication skills
Displays willingness in sharing information
Effectively collaborates with team mates to realize organizational goals
Client-centered; able to develop and grow productive client relationships
Fluent in spoken and written English; knowledge

- State your interest in the OHCHR, including knowledge of how the Southern Africa Regional Office works
- Specify availability, particularly earliest start date
- Indicate skills in Information Technology and computer programmes you are proficient with
- Summarize applicant’s geographic and/or primary thematic pillars’ areas of interest
- Show most recent academic degree obtained or earliest graduation date

AHRI Communications Internship Programme 2020

The AHRI is calling on qualified and interested individuals to apply for its upcoming Communications Internship Programme for the 2020 financial year.

The Africa Health Research Institute is an independent, multi-disciplinary research institute operating two facilities in KwaZulu-Natal. The Institute’s primary objective is to become a source of important breakthroughs into the transmission, susceptibility and cure of TB, HIV and other related illnesses. The AHRI also works to improve on current methods of treatment, diagnosis and prevention.

AHRI Communications Internship Programme 2020

The African Health Research Institute, together with the Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence is in need of a dynamic individual to be part of their Communications Department. The main purpose of the Communications Intern is to provide support with the organizations’ multimedia, writing and other related administrative tasks.

As a Communications Intern, the successful candidate will given the following duties and responsibilities:

Writing and editing stories
Performing video and photography productions for external and internal viewers
Ensuring social media and other online content are up to date
Organizing events
Performing admin support tasks
Providing assistance with other Communications Department tasks as needed

Who should apply?

Applicants will need to meet the following minimum requirements in order for their application to be considered:

Holds a degree or diploma in brand communication, media, visual communication, media, and graphic design, or
Holds a degree in BSocSCi, BSC or BA with demonstrated experience or diploma in communications or media environment
Multi-media skills such as video creation and editing are a big plus
Knowledge in the use of website CMS is prferred
Demonstrated experience or keen interest in Science Communication is a definite edge
Matric level biology and physical science is an preferred
Some work experience is an advantage
Must have a strong portfolio and demonstrated creativity and initiative in written and visual communication

UN Global Compact Internship Programme 2020

The United Nations Global Compact South African Regional Hub is opening its Internship Programme to suitable and interested individuals to send in their applications and qualify.

As the most expansive corporate sustainability initiative in the world, the UNGC has more than 9,500 participating companies and 67 local networks around the globe. It collaborates with big companies and industry experts with the goal of developing fresh and innovative guidance and best practices to push and manage change necessary to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDP).

UN Global Compact Internship Programme 2020

The UNGC Internship Programme runs for a period of three to six months where the successful intern will have an opportunity to acquire hands-on experience and working knowledge of an international organization’s communications and community engagement processes as well as the unique aspects of corporate social responsibility in South Africa.

The key duties and responsibilities of the UNGC Intern are as follows:

Provide support with daily operational tasks such as continuous coordination and communications with Global Compact affiliates in Africa
Assist in special events/activities connected to African GCNs e.g. regional meetings, the Annual Local Network Forum and more
Provide support with collection and management of organizational data sourced from local networks
Support adherence to prescribed Local Network good governance and quality standards (e.g. Regional Network Council presentations, meeting agendas and quarterly communications
Provide support with the design and execution of Global Compact initiatives in Africa including drafting presentation, meeting agendas and concept notes

Who should apply?

To qualify, you will need to meet the minimum requirements listed below:

Pursuing last year of qualification for a Bachelor’s Degree in International Development, Economics, Social Sciences, Law or other related studies or
Currently pursuing a Master’s degree or
A recent graduate (no more than a year) from a Master’s degree course or equivalent studies
Possesses an understanding of African corporate sustainability as well as private sector development
Knowledge of Africa is an advantage
Knowledgeable in using standard computer software tools
Demonstrated strong interest in UN works and believes in the principles of the Charter
Proven ability to effectively interact with people from various cultural backgrounds and willing to understand have tolerance to varying views and opinions
Proficient in the English language
Knowledge of other common African languages and French is an advantage
Must be able to furnish proof of enrollment in a health insurance
