About the University of the Free State and Ida Manana Siyila

A tertiary section of Grey College was originally established in 1904 as the University of the Free State (UFS). The University of the Free State has three campuses in South Africa: Qwaqwa Campus, Bloemfontein Campus, and South Campus. The University offers students the opportunity to study for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The following faculties are available: Humanities, Health Sciences, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Open Distance Learning, Business School, and Theology and Religion.

One American family, for whom she worked for over 30 years, established the Ida Manana Siyila Scholarship to honor the memories of Ida Manana Siyila.

The University of the Free State and Ida Manana Siyila Scholarship

The University of the Free State and Ida Manana Siyila Scholarship applications are open for the academic year 2022.

Female students from any field of study who intend to pursue a degree at the University of the Free State are eligible to apply. Academically outstanding students who have been in community service or leadership are encouraged to apply.

Scholarship Coverage

Fees for registration, tuition, books, accommodations, and meals are covered by the scholarship.

In order to renew the scholarship, the bursar must pass at least 80% of their modules each year to maintain the scholarship for one academic year. The scholarship will be available for a duration of three to four years that is required to complete the Bachelor’s Degree, but it will be no longer than 6 years.

Candidates shortlisted for interviews will be notified of their status after the interview. Selection is based on personality and character, academic achievements, leadership abilities, and service. The selection committee is made up of 7 representatives from UFS.

Who should apply?

Applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements before applying (you will not be considered if you do not meet all the requirements):

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa
  • The applicant must be female
  • Your academic record must be strong
  • The applicant must come from an economically disadvantaged background
  • A Matric certificate from the province of the Free State must be completed in 2021
  • At least 36 UFS Admission Points (AP-score) must be earned, as well as a Bachelor level pass
  • The University of the Free State must have accepted you for a Bachelor’s Degree program in 2022
  • Total household income must be less than R600 000 per year (before tax) – this includes ALL income (grant, salary, pension, etc) (not older than 3 months).
  • During your school career, you must have done community service or been involved in leadership
  • Applicants must not qualify for NSFAS funding

Documents Required

Your application will not be considered valid unless you submit clear copies of all supporting documentation (submission of these documents is mandatory; if any of them are missing, your application will be disqualified):

  • Documents of identification (certified copies)
  • Certificate of matriculation (certified copy)
  • University of the Free State acceptance letter for 2022 (on institution’s letterhead)
  • Proof of household income (pay stubs if employed, affidavit of unemployment, last three months’ bank statements, pension or grant documentation if applicable)
  • Documentation concerning your orphanage or emancipation, if applicable (certified copy)
  • Address proof
  • The personal statement should be no more than three pages long, Times New Roman, 12 point, and follow these guidelines:
    • A brief description of yourself, including what you have achieved in education and what you have done to meet scholarship criteria
    • Your involvement in your academic program, both personally and actively
    • Community service and leadership lessons you’ve learned
    • The values that are most valuable to you, and the values you believe will be most helpful at school
    • The reason you selected your area of study/ field of study and the research you conducted to ensure this is a course that matches your strengths and personality
    • Your future ambitions and goals

The deadline for applications is 24 February 2022. Please apply before the closing date to ensure your application is considered – applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
