Underwriters Laboratory: Junior Project Engineer Internship 2019

UL LLC, otherwise known as Underwriters Laboratories, is currently looking to select two (2) interns for its Junior Project Engineer Internship Programme for 2019. Known as the Underwriters’ Electrical Bureau when it was established in 1834, it changed its name through the 20th century to Underwriters Laboratories. This international safety consulting and certification body was involved in safety assessment of a great number of new technologies of the time.

UL’s headquarters is in Northbrook, Illinois. The company has grown into a big international organization operating 64 laboratories in 104 countries. From its early days as a non-profit electrical and fire safety organization, it is now a for-profit organization dealing with broader safety issues. These issues include water quality, hazardous substances, food safety, safety and compliance education, performance testing and environmental sustainability.

Junior Project Engineer Internship Programme 2019 at Underwriters Laboratory

UL’s Junior Project Engineer Programme runs for a 12-month period. As UL expands its presence in South Africa, the selected interns will be exposed to a wide range of tasks including, but not limited to the following:

  • Conduct diligence studies
  • Operation and construction monitoring
  • Contractual reviews
  • Irradiation studies
  • Energy yield analysis
  • Strategic market advice
  • Regulatory development
  • Project development assistance
  • Technology assessment
  • Analysis and review

Moreover, the selected interns will provide assistance to the engineering team as they develop energy solutions throughout its stages which includes the following:

  • Costing
  • Design
  • Reports
  • Monitoring
  • Project planning
  • On-site installations
  • International and local travel

Career Options

Successful completion of the one-year UL Junior Project Engineer Internship programme does not guarantee permanent employment within the company.

Requirements or Eligibility

To be considered for the internship, the following basic qualifications mist be met:

  • Completed a degree in B. Engineering, B. Science, B. Tech or National Diploma in Civil and Electrical engineering
  • Acquired at least 2-3 years experience in renewable energy
  • Excellent MS Word and Excel skills
  • Able to generate reports
  • Good English communication and writing skills
  • Knowledgeable in the solar and wind industry
  • Capable of adapting and learning quickly
  • Independent
  • Can speak Portuguese or French an advantage
